Meet Our December Social Star: A Spotlight on [MATTHEW RANGEL]

December 1, 2024

Social Star

It's no surprise that we chose Matthew Rangel for our December Social Star. If you are on social media like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok you have most likely seen Matt in his Hilarious and witty Parodies about the Bar industry. Although you may find his content funny, for so many, this is their reality, whether a bartender, bar back, server, manager, owner or a customer; you can relate to his skits in some way or another.

He has utterly mastered the art of showing you inside the minds of bartenders and service industry workers, the good, the bad and the ugly, in the most truthful and hysterical way so that he's not taken too seriously. But if you know.... You Know.

Matt has over 76K Followers on Facebook, over 85K Followers on Instagram and over 106K Followers on TikTok with over 10 million Likes on his Videos and Rightfully so.

There is no other way to close out 2024 Social Stars, but with the one and only, Matthew Rangel!

THE INTERVIEW

How long have you been in the industry?

Ten years this upcoming February. I started as a barback in 2015 & then quickly moved up to bartending. I have worn every single hat along the way including Barback, Bartender, Senior Bartender, Bartender Manager, Cook, & Security.

What made you choose this line of work?

Necessity? Haha. I went back to college at age 25 to pursue my passion, acting. A college student pursuing a degree in theatre arts has very, very limited time. While in college a local bar said they needed help barbacking. The schedule fit & the money was great, so I jumped in & never looked back.

If you could change one misconception about the industry, what would it be?

That this industry is mentally & physically easy. Yeah, sometimes you just see us opening a beer and that's it, but I promise you, if you do this job long enough, you will understand that that's not just what we are doing. Service industry workers are some of the toughest people, mentally & physically, that I have ever seen in my life. It takes a certain person to be able to do our job.

What is one piece of advice to anyone wanting to work in this industry?

Loyalty only gets you so far in this business. Don't get me wrong, don't fuck people over BUT know that whoever is above you, whoever owns the business will almost ALWAYS do right by themselves and their business first so act accordingly. You are replaceable. You do not need to sacrifice your mental and physical health for a business that can and will replace you in a second. Also don't be a pushover. Don't not EVER do work for free or "for the sake of the business". They CAN pay you.

Your videos are being seen across the world wide web! What do you hope to accomplish with the content you create?

A sense of pride and comradery within the community. Knowing that you aren't alone in your struggles. We all forget a ranch or two & have that asshole regular "No tip Larry" at our bars, but we also have that amazing coworker and those calming, silent, first 30 seconds after you kick everyone out at last call, and you finally can breathe. For people to feel seen in this industry.

When you go out to a bar, what is the one cocktail would you NEVER order from another bartender and why?

A Negroni. It's awful. Nobody likes it and if you act like you like it, stop kidding yourself.

When someone asks you to make them something fruity. What is your Go to Drink?

Vodka, Soco, Sloe Gin, Triple Sec, lime juice, Lemonade, cranberry.

and lastly...

THE DRINKERS CHOICE CLUB EXCLUSIVE QUESTION

What is your favorite cocktail recipe (that you make, or you like to drink) of all time?

Bloody Molly with Tullamore Dew.
